The Art of the Unwind: A Mini Self Care Guide

Rest the bag down.

Place the keys on the desk.

Shoes off.

We all have our rinse and repeat cycles after powering through our 9-5 situations. Some of us even mastered our own unwind routine without realizing it. A few small actions can turn things around for you. All the little things that tugged at you all day suddenly melts away when you initiate the first step.

Here are 10 ways to wind down after you've slain the day:

1. Leave your work where it belongs... at work!
The pressure may be on to get everything done in a timely manner. Make sure to complete high priority tasks before leaving the office. The last thing you want to do is kill your own vibe by bringing that pressure home with you.

2. Set the tone!
Kick your shoes off. Take a shower or even a relaxing bubble bath. Watch a movie, read a book, or put on your favorite tunes to take the edge off. Here's a playlist to get into:

If you're into podcasts, catch up on your weekly episodes. Here's a quick list of podcasts to get into

3. Don't make it technical
As early as you can, minimize the use of electronics, including the TV. Also, shut down all social media at a certain time every night. Your Facebook, Pinterest, Instagram, Twitter, and email can wait.

4. Tea time
We're not talking about other people's business. Try to relax and get cozy with a cup of your favorite tea. We recommend peppermint or chamomile.

5. Detox by taking a bath
A hot shower or bath can flip the script! Eliminate stress and toxins from the body by enjoying a bubble bath with Epsom salts. Don't forget to light your favorite candle!

6. A little aromatherapy never hurt nobody!

The power of scent is profound, and breathing in a relaxing essential oil can totally shift your head and heart space.

Some studies have found that lavender essential oil is beneficial for a number of conditions, including insomnia. Use a few drops before bed on your wrists or even your pillow!

If you prefer to use a diffuser in your space, put a few drops of your favorite scents to set the mood in your room.

7. Journal
We chatted a bit about the advantages of journaling in a previous blog post, and it fits right into the unwinding experience. A great takeaway is to do a brain dump – open your journal to a blank page and let loose; write down everything that is on your mind until there is nothing left. Your thoughts/worries/to-do lists are safe and sound, so you can just relax, let go, and enjoy the moment!

9. Make your space your sanctuary
We know we're all adults here, but we've got to stick to a bedtime. Try to go to bed at the same time every night. Ensure that you go to rest on clean sheets with the softest pillows you can find. Sleep is a luxury for most of us - why not sleep luxuriously?

10. Stretch!
If a daily fitness routine isn't included in your after-work routine, then you should get a few light stretches in before bed. Incorporate light yoga and deep breathing to settle those nerves.

You don't have to do everything on the list, but we challenge you to adapt to your own routine. Before you know it, you'll be in tip-top shape to take on the world every morning!
